Buddy Games Day

How can we use chance and data to design, run and honestly evaluate a Games Day for our Prep buddies?

Thirteen lessons. Eight on probability before the break, five on statistics after it, and a real event in between.

How the unit fits together

Year 6 teams design a chance game, run it for their Prep buddies, then analyse what actually happened. The two halves are assessed as one folio.

Lessons

Each lesson has its own page with everything needed to run it, and its printable sheets underneath.

  1. 1TERM 3 WK 9

    Where does it sit?

Every probability is a number between 0 and 1, placed on a scale and written three ways.

  2. 2TERM 3 WK 9

    Sample space and spinners

Listing every outcome, and why the bottom number counts everything that could happen.

  3. 3TERM 3 WK 9

    What might the deck be?

Working backwards from probabilities to a sample space. Withdrawal-safe.

  4. 4TERM 3 WK 9

    Expected or observed?

Expected is calculated, observed is counted, and they are almost never equal.

  5. 5TERM 3 WK 10

    Simulation at scale

Twenty trials, then two hundred, then two thousand — and what happens to the gap.

  6. 6TERM 3 WK 10

    Is this die fair?

Judging a claim from evidence, and how many trials it takes to be sure. Withdrawal-safe.

  7. 7TERM 3 WK 10

    Designing for our buddies

Teams design a chance game for a Prep buddy, then critique each other against the brief.

  8. 8TERM 3 WK 10

Buddy Games Day folio: Part A

Summative. Seven items on the team’s own game, individually and under supervision.

    Part A
  9. 9T4 WK 1

Which stall did they like more?

Two ratings sets with the same range and different modes.

  10. ★T4 WK 1

    Games Day

The buddy session. What to print, the two jobs, and how one turn goes.

    Event
  11. 10T4 WK 1

    Faster, or just different?

Counted and measured data, and why they are drawn differently.

  12. 11T4 WK 2

The chart that lies with true numbers

The truncated axis: true numbers, dishonest picture.

  13. 12T4 WK 2

    True numbers, collected badly

An honest chart, and a survey that cannot be trusted.

  14. 13T4 WK 3

    Part B of the folio

Six items on set data. Assessment.

Used across several lessons rather than belonging to one. Everything here opens or prints straight from this page.

Teacher only

The unit plan, the assessment spec and marking guide, the Part B marking guide, the diagnostic analyses and the QA scripts are in teacher-only-NOT-for-github, which is gitignored and never published.

On every lesson page — eight tabs, a Teacher Mode toggle that reveals teaching notes, misconceptions and answers, projectable questions banded SF, CF and CU, and a three-way differentiation gate. Lessons 8 and 13 are the assessment and sit behind a release code.
