Can we get it back?

…and do we always want to?

Seven lessons on reversible and irreversible change, built around a real rusting problem at our school.

How the unit fits together

A rust investigation runs quietly in the background from Week 1 to Week 5 while each lesson builds the ideas needed to understand it.

Lessons

Each lesson has its own page with everything needed to run it, and its printable sheets underneath.

  1. 1WEEK 1

    Made to rust

The cross at our entrance, a card sort, six stations, and the rust jars sealed for five weeks.

  2. 2WEEK 2

    Does stuff disappear?

Weighing salt as it dissolves, and the same fizzing reaction in a sealed bag and an open beaker.

  3. 3WEEK 3

    Get it back

Recovering eight grams of dissolved salt — filtering against decanting — and plant resin as a reversible glue.

  4. 4WEEK 4

    The point of no return

Heating sugar until it stops being sugar, then chocolate against egg white on the thermometer.

    CP1
  5. 5WEEK 5

    Reading the evidence

The nails come out heavier. Graphing both classes, pulling apart the other class's method, and why the cross was made to rust.

    CP2
  6. 6WEEK 6

    Run it

Your own investigation on steel wool — what protects metal from rusting — recorded as it happens.

  7. 7WEEK 7

    Report and defence

A one-page recommendation to the person responsible for the rusting — and answering their hardest questions.
